Nine

One by one George flew us across the river. The pygmy dragon’s body sagged by the time Roger’s feet touched the ground.

I rubbed his scaled head. “Take a break now. There’s more to come.” A lot more.

The Lincoln Memorial was the first building within our field of vision. The marble monument seemed mainly intact.

“This is the start of the maze,” Roger observed. He pointed to a worn path ahead.

“We could use more light,” Jason said. “It seems darker here.”

A faint glow grew visible behind the steps of the memorial.

“Are you sure you’re not a wizard?” Liam asked the boy. “Maybe a dollop of djinn blood?”

Jason looked mildly alarmed as he shook his head.

The glow increased in size and intensified. By the time it rounded the corner of the monument, it was clear what we were dealing with.

“Flame giant,” Roger said, staring at the rising flames that now formed the shape of a giant.

“Oh, wonderful,” Liam said. “And here I thought it was just a huge fireball. I feel much better knowing it’s a sentient being.”

Meghan nudged me. “You’re a witch. Can’t you conjure a water spell?”

I watched the movements of the fire giant. “Not that kind of witch.”

Meghan blew a raspberry. “Looks like you drew the short magic straw.”

“Tell me about it,” I murmured.

Alaric leaned over and whispered, “Can you manipulate its blood?”

I waved a hand in the direction of the monster. “It’s a walking mountain of fire. Where do you think I’ll find blood?”

Roger unfastened his cufflinks. “If Alaric and I turn invisible, we can approach from behind while you distract it.”

“And do what to it?” I asked. “There’s nothing to sink your fangs into.”

The flame giant flickered with light and heat as it lumbered toward us.

“I can’t blow it up,” Liam said with a mixture of surprise and disappointment.

Jason clutched his satchel. “The holy water!”

“I hate to break it to you, but I think you’re going to need more water than what’s in that vial of yours,” Alaric told him.

Ignoring him, Jason opened the satchel and pulled out the antique box. “It might not work on vampires, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work on flame giants. It’s a type of demon.” He handed a vial to Roger and one to Alaric. “Sneak attack.”

I didn’t have any better ideas.

I watched as the two vampires blended with the background.

“Jason, let’s go,” Liam urged.

The boy remained rooted in place. “Wait. I want to see if my idea works.”

I put a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “I’ll wait with him.”

The others started toward the maze.

Jason began to fidget. “The flames aren’t getting smaller.”

“We can’t see what they’re doing. Maybe they haven’t used the water yet.”

The boy’s face crumpled as he watched long tendrils smack the ground like fiery whips. “It’s attacking them. I have to help. It’ll be my fault if they die.”

Before I could stop him, he pushed me aside and ran toward the flame giant. My stomach lurched at the sight. That boy was willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of the vampires he wanted to overthrow.
